Oriental Heroes is a popular Hong Kong-based manhua created by Wong Yuk Long, a writer/artist responsible for also creating a number of other popular manhua titles. It was created in 1970, and it continues to be published today. The book was the first Hong Kong manhua title based on action and fighting, often borrowing from the wuxia literary world. It established a new action genre of Hong Kong manhua and spawned many imitators. The theme of its stories often revolve around brotherhood and the fight for justice. The 2006 movie Dragon Tiger Gate was based on this manhua. Oriental Heroes is the book's official English name. Its Chinese name is pronounced in Cantonese, Lùhng Fú Mùhn (simplified Chinese: 龙虎门; traditional Chinese: 龍虎門; pinyin: Lóng Hǔ Mén). This name translates as "Dragon Tiger Gate" in English, and is in reference to the name of the fictional kungfu school and organization that is a major subject matter in the book. Oriental Heroes was first published in 1970 under the title Little Rascals (traditional Chinese: 小流氓; Cantonese Yale: Síu Làuh Màhn). It featured stories about young people living in public housing estates in Hong Kong fighting gangsters and criminals. The heroes of the stories exhibited antisocial behaviours, but routinely fought for justice. In the early years of the book's run, the fighting was very graphically illustrated. Various weapons were used, where spilled blood, internal organs, guts, and bones were shown in the injuries that the characters sustained. People criticised the graphic violence depicted in Oriental Heroes and other similar action genre manhua, eventually leading to the enactment of the Indecent Publication Law in 1975, banning explicit violence in manhua. The time is Sengoku in feudal Japan, in the land of Tosa. The Chousokabe family lives in Castle Okou with Kunichika as the head of the clan. He plans on invading neighboring states to control more land and bring prosperity to the people. However, the son, Motochika, disagrees with his father's course of action and refuses to take part in the warfare. The angered Kunichika throws his son into a river and disowns him. Motochika struggles to stay afloat and eventually loses consciousness but washes up on land alive. Confused as to why he washed up on the beach and there is no Castle Okou in sight, he asks the people and learns he is hundreds of years in the future and the Chousokabe family has not been heard of in years. Still not wanting to believe the reality of the situation, he wanders the land trying to make sense of the matter. Through a turn of events, he meets Sakamoto Ryouma, the famous revolutionist of the 1860's. Will Motochika help Ryouma overthrow the feudal empire, the same government he grew up in? What destiny holds for these two characters from different centuries that never even should have met in the first place?

The series begins in A.G. 108 when the UE attack the space colony Ovan, where Flit Asuno now lives after he escaped colony Angel before its destruction. Within it he discovers the blueprints for a powerful weapon from the past—the ancient messiah named "Gundam." From these blueprints, Flit spends the next several years studying engineering at an Earth Federation base on the Nora space colony and designing the Gundam AGE-1. Seven years later, in A.G. 115, Flit completes the Gundam AGE-1 Normal, just as the UE attack Nora, and make use of it to aid the crew of Federation's battleship "Diva" in evacuating the colony's citizens before it is destroyed. Determined to bring the battle to the U.E. for destroying his home twice, Flit agrees to serve at Diva's mobile suit squad piloting the Gundam. After obtaining enough data and military power to establish a course of action, the crew of Diva and their allies launch a sucessful attack that destroyed the U.E.'s secret fortress in the Ambat asteroid. There they learn that the U.E. are actually the descendants of a supposedly failed human mission sent to colonize Mars, left for dead by the Earth Federation, who formed their own nation on the red planet called Veigan.
After deploying several sleeper agents around the globe, the Vagans launch a surprise attack that finally brings the war to the Earth.
